Jakarta. Deputy Governor-elect Sandiaga Uno said he will fulfil a campaign promise to build a state-of-the-art football stadium for the city's iconic football club, Persija Jakarta.

During a campaign visit to Cakung, East Jakarta, in November last year, Sandiaga and his running mate, Anies Baswedan, promised Persija a new stadium similar to Old Trafford, the home ground of English Premier club Manchester United.

Persija has now asked the newly elected Jakarta leaders to carry out their promise as soon as possible.

"My daughter Amira, who is a football fanatic, reminded me this morning about the promise. She even went to France to watch the Euro [2016] final last year," Sandiaga said in Jakarta on Thursday (20/04), as quoted by state-run news agency Antara.

Anies and Sandiaga are currently in a transition period before the incumbents, Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat step down in October.

"It's acceptable for the public to demand that we carry out our promises, and we'll fulfil it all," Sandiaga said.

However, Anies-Sandiaga was not the only candidate pair to promise Persija fans a new stadium. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and his running mate Sylviana Murni, who were eliminated in the first round of the election, also made a similar promise.

Persija is currently homeless while the state-owned Gelora Bung Karno Stadium – its traditional home ground – is being renovated for the 2018 Asian Games. The club's old stadium was transformed into a public park 11 years ago.

The prestigious club is temporarily using the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi, West Java, as its home ground.
