Jakarta. Parakrama Organizer will present the seventh installment of its iconic wedding exhibition Gebyar Pernikahan Indonesia, or GPI, at the Balai Kartini convention center in Jakarta on July 21-23.

GPI focuses on showcasing and selling products associated with traditional Indonesian weddings.

"Many Indonesians still prefer to have traditional weddings,"Parakrama Organizer director Arief Rachman said during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (13/07). "It shows in the high number of people that attend our events."

About 15,000 people attended the previous GPI exhibition on Jan. 20-22, when nearly Rp 40 billion ($3 million) exchanged hands.

This month's event has been dubbed the Vibrant Brides and Grooms of Sumatra, taking on the theme of traditional Sumatran weddings.

"People of Sumatra [...] usually choose to have traditional weddings," Arief said. "Thus, we believe their [wedding] traditions deserve to be featured at the event."

The three-day event will consist of fashion shows, make-up demos, health talks and live music performances.

More than 130 wedding vendors, consisting of bridal houses, catering, make-up artists, musicians, photographers, videographers and wedding venues, will pitch attractive packages during the event.

"Visitors will get one lucky dip coupon for every Rp 500,000 worth of transactions," Arief said.

The grand prize of the lucky dip, which will be announced on the final day of the event, is a Honda Brio motor vehicle.

On the opening day of the event, Chichi Wedding and Event Organizer will present a wedding parade of Aceh, Lampung, Padang (West Sumatra) and Palembang (South Sumatra) brides and grooms in full traditional costumes.

"Traditional dances from those regions will also be presented during the parade," said Selvy Wirdiana, owner of Chichi Wedding and Event Organizer.

Aluira Kebaya label will also present a fashion show named Traditional Modern.

"The collection will feature modern innovations on Sumatra's traditional wedding attires, which will make them easier and more convenient to wear," said Liza Aluira, owner of Aluira Kebaya.

The collection will consist of 16 looks of traditional bridal costumes from several ethnic groups in Sumatra. Red will be the dominant color in the collection.

"Red is still the preferred color of Sumatra's brides and grooms," Liza said.

On Saturday, a health talk on pre-marital medical check-ups will be held on the main stage of at Balai Kartini.

The event will culminate on Sunday evening with another wedding parade by Chichi Wedding and Event Organizer.

"We hope the event will help perpetuate Indonesia's wedding traditions and inspire many brides and grooms-to-be," Arief said.
