Jakarta. The third Sawahlunto International Songket Carnival, better known as SISCa 2017, is scheduled to take place in West Sumatra on Aug. 25-27.
Sawahlunto Mayor Ali Yusuf said the carnival will feature several with interesting events.
"We have initiated [the events] again based on the spirit of preserving the traditional Songket Silungkang," he said in a statement on Thursday (03/08).
"This time, the theme is 'Heritage for Sustainability,' as we hope it will again bring success and have a positive impact on the economy of Sawahlunto," Ali added.
A series of events, including an international songket exhibition, children's fashion show, SISCa Night and a national songket conference, will culminate in a carnival featuring Songket Silungkang designs.
"It will be colorful and filled with attractions," Ali said.
Songket is a locally produced textile, which forms part of the cultural heritage of the region, where it is used for social functions as part of traditional clothing.
Songket Silungkang is also popular with foreigners, which helps to support the local community while also boosting tourism.
"I hope Silungkang will continue to be an inspiration and source of creativity, not only as a cultural attraction, for designers and industry players. It can also make a great contribution to increase the welfare of the people," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said.
